Dairy and Cheeses

Origin: Uruguay

Uruguay is not a large milk producer (with respect to its total volume), but in terms of competitiveness, the Uruguayan dairy sector is similar to that of countries like New Zealand.

The country has 3.5 million inhabitants and has a consumption of more than 220 kg of milk per capita/year. Despite this, it obtained a surplus of 73% of its total production in 2022, that is, around 2.1 million tons, for export.

Part of this efficiency obtained comes from a concentrated productive structure existing in the country, with just over three thousand livestock farms. They are large and very productive farms with a herd size of more than 120 cows on average per property, which produce more than 5,000 liters per cow a year, and a production of more than 1,700 liters per establishment a day. Main dairy products exported by Uruguay are:

  • Whole powdered milk (around 70% of total exports).

  • Skim milk powder (around 5%).

  • Cheeses (around 15%).

  • Butter (around 5%).
